How to Check Gold Purity: A Complete Guide to Karats and Hallmarks

Understand what 22K, 18K, and 916 markings actually mean, and the simple checks you can do in-store before buying gold jewellery.

Gold purity is measured in karats (K), with 24K representing pure gold. Because pure gold is too soft for everyday jewellery, it is alloyed with metals like copper and silver to improve durability, which is why you will most commonly see 22K, 18K, and 916 gold on sale.

What the Numbers Mean

A 22K piece is 91.6% pure gold, which is also why it is often stamped "916" โ€” a hallmark used widely across South Asia. 18K gold is 75% pure and is more scratch-resistant, making it a common choice for rings worn daily. The remaining percentage in both cases is alloy metal that adds strength and, in the case of rose or white gold, changes the colour.

  • 24K โ€” 99.9% pure gold, very soft, rarely used for daily-wear jewellery
  • 22K / 916 โ€” 91.6% pure gold, the standard for traditional gold jewellery
  • 18K โ€” 75% pure gold, more durable, popular for rings and everyday pieces

Checking Before You Buy

Always look for the hallmark stamp on the inside of a ring band or the clasp of a chain โ€” it should show the karat value along with an assaying mark. A reputable jeweller will also weigh the piece in front of you and provide a bill that states the purity, weight, and making charges separately.

If you are ever unsure, ask to see the item tested on a karat meter. It only takes a minute and gives you peace of mind that what you are paying for matches what you are taking home.
